For quite some time those “in the know” have been speculating on the possibility of Google releasing their own Operating System. Today Google announced Google Chrome OS on their official blog:

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we’re already talking to partners about the project, and we’ll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

Google’s recently announced Wave, is a web-based, open source collaboration tool incorporating many features found in Google Apps into one streamlined interface. Wave is intended to take on Microsoft Outlook as the communications client de rigueur featuring email, instant messaging, document/image/video sharing.

Google are touting the system as a re-imagining of web-based communication. It’s “what email would look like if it were invented today.”

Google describe the service as:

A wave is equal parts conversation and document. People can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.

A wave is shared. Any participant can reply anywhere in the message, edit the content and add participants at any point in the process. Then playback lets anyone rewind the wave to see who said what and when.

A wave is live. With live transmission as you type, participants on a wave can have faster conversations, see edits and interact with extensions in real-time.

Wave is a cross-platform protocol capable of running on any web server. Because it is an open source standard, developers around the world are free to extend, modify and create their own versions of Wave suited to their requirements.

Google Wave is aggressively positioned to compete directly with corporate email systems, IM systems and social networking services such as  Twitter and Facebook. Being open source and protocol-based makes Wave particularly attractive to developers and small businesses, providing a free, extensible collaboration environment. Tango Technology will be watching Wave’s development closely and examining its usefulness for small and medium businesses in the future.
